THE STANLY NEWS PRESS I Albemarle, NC I Thursday, August 4, 2011 7A I NEWS Post offices to remain open BY TIFFANY THOMPSON News Editor The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has proposed closing approximately 3,700 post offices- over the next year due to falling revenues, though none of Stanly County's nine post offices are on the list. As more customers choose to conduct their. postal business online, on their smart phones and at other shopping destinations, the need for the U.S. Postal Service to maintain its nearly 32,000 retail offices diminishes.
The postal service saw a $8.5 billion loss in 2010, "which equates to about $23 million a day, and we are projected to lose $6.5 billion this year," Tonya Bennett, acting communications coordinator of the USPS, said in a recent interview. The U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. Closing post offices is one of several proposals the Postal Service has made recently to cut costs. Another was a recent announcement that the postal service plans to stop mail delivery on Saturdays, a move Postmaster General Pat Donahoe says could save $3 billion annually.
