Revisiting every Oklahoma player picked in the 1st round of the NFL Draft since 2000 (2024)

Tyler Guyton became the 20th Oklahoma player to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since 2000. Here's a look back at the other 19 Sooners to hear their name called in Round 1.

Tom Green

Tyler Guyton joined an elite and ever-growing group of former Oklahoma players Thursday night.

The former OU offensive lineman, who started 14 games at right tackle over the last two seasons, became the 49th first-round draft pick in Oklahoma history. The Dallas Cowboysselected Guyton with the 29th overall pick in the first round late Thursday night after trading back from No. 24 with the Detroit Lions. Dallas' decision to move down in the first round and select Guyton, who'd been linked to the Cowboys (among other teams) in the leadup to the draft, keeps the Manor, Texas, native close to home — and a short trip south from where he finished out his college career.

Guyton, who began his career at TCU before transferring to Oklahoma and blossoming into a first-round pick under offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, is the 20th first-round pick for the Sooners since the 2000 NFL Draft (and the 12th offensive lineman developed by Bedenbaugh to be drafted at any point in the last decade). Oklahoma has had at least one player selected in the first round in 14 of the 25 drafts during that span, with three players selected No. 1 overall in their respective drafts and an impressive fourfirst-round picks (three of them in the top-four picks) in the 2010 NFL Draft.

With Guyton joining that club of Oklahoma Sooners-turned-NFL first-rounders, here's a look back at the program's other first-round selections since 2000, what they accomplished during their time with the Sooners and how their NFL careers played (and continue to play) out…

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Harrison started 24 games and played 1,866 snaps across 34 career appearances for Oklahoma while primarily working at left tackle during his career in Norman. He was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2022, when he allowed just one sack and no hits on 447 pass-blocking snaps. During his first season with the Jaguars, Harrison started 17 games at right tackle and allowed five sacks on 665 pass-blocking opportunities.

2020 NFL Draft

CeeDee Lamb, wide receiver: 17th overall to the Dallas Cowboys

Lamb was a consensus first-team All-American and a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award during his junior season with Oklahoma, when he caught 62 passes for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping lead OU to a third Big 12 championship and third College Football Playoff appearance in as many seasons. Since joining the Cowboys, Lamb has become one of the top receivers in the NFL. Like Lamb, Murray helped lead Oklahoma to three Big 12 titles and three CFP appearances in his three seasons with the program after signing with the Sooners as part of their 2017 recruiting class. Murray started all 42 games for Oklahoma during his time in Norman and finished his career with 335 tackles, including 37 for a loss and 9.5 sacks. 2019 NFL Draft

Kyler Murray, quarterback: first overall to the Arizona Cardinals

After starting his career at Texas A&M, Murray transferred to Oklahoma following his freshman season and went on to win the Heisman during his final season with the Sooners in 2018. He was the AP College Football Player of the Year, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American while completing 69% of his passes for 4,361 yards, 42 touchdowns and just seven interceptions and running for another 1,001 yards and 12 scores. He became the program's second consecutive Heisman winner and second consecutive top overall pick (more on that in a moment). He was the 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and has thrown for 15,647 yards and 94 touchdowns while rushing for another 2,448 yards and 26 touchdowns in his five NFL seasons.

Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, wide receiver: 25th overall to the Baltimore Ravens

The 5-foot-9 Brown spent two seasons at Oklahoma after beginning his college career at the JUCO level, and the speedy wide receiver made the most of his time with the Sooners, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2017 and 2018. He was a first-team All-American in his final season at OU, registering 75 receptions for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns while serving as the favorite target of Murray during his Heisman campaign. Since making the league, Brown has played for the Ravens and Cardinals (where he reunited with Murray) and heads into the 2024 season with the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs. He has 313 career receptions for 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns.

2018 NFL Draft

Baker Mayfield, quarterback: first overall to the Cleveland Browns

Mayfield completed the arc of going from walk-on to Heisman winner — and then No. 1 overall pick — after a stellar career at Oklahoma, where he was a three-time All-American, including a unanimous All-American during his Heisman-winning season. After being drafted by the Browns, Mayfield has bounced around the league — with stints with the Panthers and Rams — but has found a home with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his six seasons, he has thrown for 20,332 yards and 134 touchdowns while completing 61.9% of his passes.

2013 NFL Draft

Lane Johnson, offensive tackle: fourth overall to the Philadelphia Eagles

Johnson started his career at Kilgore Community College in Texas before transferring to Oklahoma, where he went from scout-team quarterback in 2009 to tight end in 2010, defensive end in spring of 2011 before settling in as an offensive tackle that fall. He went on to earn second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2012 as he developed into a first-round pick. In his 11 NFL seasons, Johnson has earned four All-Pro honors and won a Super Bowl with the Eagles.

2010 NFL Draft

Sam Bradford, quarterback: first overall to the St. Louis Rams (now Los Angeles Rams)

One of three Heisman winners on this list, Bradford—like Mayfield and Murray after him—went first overall in his draft after his redshirt junior season. Bradford won the Heisman in 2008, when he led the Sooners to the BCS National Championship Game against Florida, but after opting to return for one more season he missed most of the 2009 campaign with a shoulder injury. Despite coming off shoulder surgery and not throwing at the NFL Combine, Bradford was still selected No. 1 overall by the Rams in the 2010 draft and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. He went on to play nine NFL Seasons for four different teams (the Rams, Eagles, Vikings and Cardinals) while throwing for 19,449 yards and 103 touchdowns while completing 62.5% of his passes.

Gerald McCoy, defensive tackle: third overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

McCoy was the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2007 and followed it up with back-to-back first-team All-America seasons to close out his Oklahoma career before declaring for the 2010 NFL Draft. The Buccaneers took him with the third overall pick, and he went on to play 12 seasons in the league, including nine with Tampa Bay. He finished his career with 334 tackles, 59.5 sacks, 24 pass breakups, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Trent Williams, offensive lineman: fourth overall to the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders)

Williams rounded out a dominant first round for Oklahoma in 2010, when the Sooners had players selected with three of the top-four picks that year. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder was a two-time first-team All-Big 12 lineman and a consensus All-American during his final season at OU before going fourth overall to Washington. He spent 10 seasons with the franchise before being traded to San Francisco, where he's still serving as the 49ers' starting tackle. During his 14 NFL seasons, Williams has earned five All-Pro honors while starting 177 of the 178 games he has appeared in.

Jermaine Gresham, tight end: 21st overall to the Cincinnati Bengals

Gresham posted two stellar seasons at tight end for Oklahoma, combining for 1,468 yards and 25 touchdowns on 103 receptions during the 2007 and 2008 seasons for the Sooners. That 2008 season saw him earn first-team All-Big 12 and first-team All-America honors before he was selected 21st overall by the Bengals in the 2010 draft. Gresham played nine seasons in the league—five with the Bengals and four with the Cardinals—and twice made the Pro Bowl. He caught 377 passes for 3,752 yards and 29 touchdowns during his career.
