Music supervisor Gabe Hilfer and composer Bekon fill us in on the sound of You People.

Kenya Barris’ meet-the-parents romantic comedyYou Peopleisn’t just a love story — it’s a love letter to Los Angeles. The new movie takes mismatched future in-laws Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy on a tour of the City of Angels, accompanied by a soundtrack full of LA and West Coast icons. “Once we saw all the iconic LA landmarks, we knew the music had to echo the same sentiment,” music supervisor Gabe Hilfer tells Tudum. You can listen to that music right now, including tracks by Nipsey Hussle, MC Eiht, DJ Quik, Too $hort and Snoop Dogg.
Some of the music was baked into the film’s identity from the very start. “Two of the songs that made it into the film were in the script from the beginning: John Legend’s ‘Ordinary People’ and ‘N****s in Paris,’ ” Hilfer says.
The LA energy also made its way into the score, by way of singer and producer Bekon. “A lot of my career as a producer has been with a lot of West Coast artists,” he tells Tudum. “I got very fortunate that when I came to LA, I was surrounded by and sort of mentored by LA legends, and they showed me that really special side to LA.”
Writer-director Kenya Barris also encouraged the film’s California sound. “He’s into hip-hop, he’s into beat-driven music,” Bekon says. “And I think that the score allowed me to incorporate a lot of that in, while still hitting those real [emotions].”

Bekon wanted to ground those emotions in a score that sounded like an older type of love story. “I tried to accomplish that with all the choral and the orchestra parts,” he says. “And then whenever we were trying to move a scene forward or where there was something funny or something poignant, then maybe I would try to use a beat-driven part of the score to move the story, to make it feel contemporary.”
But the movie’s music is more than just vibes — it helps emphasize the comic differences between the characters. “Even though they are played for comedic effect due to their cultural and lyrical content, songs like ‘Rise Up’ and ‘Ordinary People’ are clearly songs that both Amira and Ezra’s parents are very familiar with,” Hilfer says. Through the music, the families inYou Peoplefind some common ground.
You can check out the soundtrack right now, and streamYou People on Netflix.
