dropping comcast, going SBC

I'm switching to SBC after lots of outages w/ comcast in recent months.

I have a linksys BEFW11S4 router/wireless unit. Do I simply enable PPPoE and supply the right username and password and
plug everything in? How often will my IP address change w/ SBC? I have a web server running on one of my machines
and am worried about having access to it after I make the move. Yes, I know running servers is a no-no.

Thanks!

Then how come SBC sells routers w/ their service? How come Linksys has information on how to configure a router w/ SBC?
Most folks I know were I live are pretty happy w/ SBC.

Comcrapsux, I say give it a shot. If you lose your cable signal a lot, then DSL will have better reliability since the DSL singal is not part of the voice band the way cable Internet is part of the t.v. signal band.

You can have PPPoE or static IP (for an extra cost and if you are close enoungh to the DSLAM -- that's a red tape issue) I have static addresses right now and run my servers with SBC's blessings.

Logitech, man what is your issue? First you come here to "help out" customers, now you complain about doing your job and helping paying customers resolve service problems? Although you said before your not an SBC tech anymore, you were a Tier 1 tech. Your job is to "fix about 20 problems a day". Now you come here and have the audicity to consider them disgusting?

I'm glad I know better about the service I receive because you are an embarasment to the legitimate Tier 1 techs.

Reading between the lines I would say that LT no longer works for SBC (I don't wonder why), and may have a sliver of an ax to grind. Anyway, this is the first time I have seen him in the forum so anything he says I would take with a grain of salt.

As to ccs, well I don't know what your issue was with CC and sorry it didn't work out. Anyway, routers work fine as long as they support PPPoE. Your IP will change often, but then you should expect it to. Mine changes between 3 weeks and 3 months, but YMMV.

Good luck.

comcrapsux, the "right" username is username@sbcglobal.net. Some people forget the "@sbcglobal.net" part.

On PPPoE, your IP will last anywhere from one day to many weeks. It really varies from place-to-place and from time-to-time. Contrary to what purported Tier 1 techs say, routers work just fine and DSL service is extremely reliable.

I have SBC DSL, very reliable for me. Only time when outages occur is during storms, even than its rare. I also use a Linksys router with my DSL with no probs at all.
Been a happy customer for almost 3 years.

Sneaky & Flippant,

Thanks for the info guys! Comcast has been out for me at least once a week for the past two months. I've called on a number of occasions and was told they were "doing work" in my area. Woke up this morning and saw the "flash-flash" on my modem again and called to see what was up. They claimed they had no outages in my area and wanted to send a tech out. Seems they had no record of my previous calls to the call center. I immediately became suspicious. My opinion is that cable companies cannot be expected to run reliable data networks, Had great service from AT&T after the @home migration with the same equipment for over 2 years.

SBC, like the other baby-bells, knows how to run networks over local loops. My dad worked for Bell Labs for over 40 years and I work for a company that makes "big friggin webtone switches" if you know what I mean. I know a thing or two about networks. My impression of the Comcast people they had on their 1st line support was that they were just cable TV people who know how to pipe HBO into your house, but totally clueless on IP networking. I'd seen their DNS servers go down on a number of occasions as well. Routing still worked and I could ping anyone if I used a IP address. The tech on phone just didn't understand.

expecting better from SBC.

If you work 1st tier support and you only fix 20 problems a day then I would say that either #1-not many problems are coming in the tech support lines or #2-you're not fixing your quota of problems. 20 phone calls a day would be a slow day for a 1st tier tech, I would think.

Comcast connection miraculously seems to be working again. It will likely die again before my SBC kit comes.

Did I mention that the soonest they could get someone out to my house was this Sunday?

Now tell me that these people aren't clueless.

you have to get a dyndns.com address to use the service.
