AS Takes Delivery of Its First MAX 8 (7M8) on 12/28/2023
Came across this cool page, which I had not seen before:
https://news.alaskaair.com/current-fleet/
Made me wonder when they will take the first of the 7M8s, and also whether it is expected to have 12F or 16F...?

Feb 15th, 2024. LAX-PDX inaugural. Seat map shows 3 rows of F followed by 5 rows of premium class. Seems like the same configuration as 738.

Probably not ..the max8 are looking at longer range ops for the most part.

Interesting that the QX fleet is now almost as big as OO's Alaska fleet. With 9 more coming they should overtake within the next year. They've come a long way since 2017 when they almost got written off by Alaska.

I believe the long term plan is to have 16 first class seats in all new aircraft. The first 737-8 will be configured the same as the 737-800 initially but Alaska has the option to increase the FC from 12 to 16 with some moving around of the economy seats. It will be interesting to see what the 737-10 layout will be.

I'm confused by the numbering and just looked up the 737MAX Wiki page and am even more confused.... Aren't there a bunch of Max9s already in service with AS? How are the Max8s coming later?

They were ordered later.

is there an “again” missing somewhere?
A year ago, QX was bigger than OO. 47 vs 42 frames
In May of 2022 QX was much bigger than OO: (62 vs 36 frames)
obviously, once they got rid of all the Q400s, OO took the lead in the frame count.

Yes that's why I think it's interesting to follow QX. QX has historically performed very poorly and Dave Campbell almost ran it into the ground. Back in 2017-18 they tried to ink capacity deals with another regional after slashing so many QX flights and having to shed some of their fleet to OO because they didn't want OO to have as much leverage in their contracts. Unfortunately they were unable to sign any. They're slowly trying to grow QX operations back but it's still difficult with the pilot shortage. It feels like QX has struggled with the pilot shortage for nearly a decade now. Hopefully they can continue to build back despite the current environment because I do prefer QX over AS service and reducing OO's leverage will be important in managing costs which have exploded over the last year or two.

That's a good point about chances of an upgrade. I like the Max for the new airplane ambience, not a fan of the overhead air things, not enough volume and air flow for the aisle seats.

Supposedly the 737-MAX8s will be going to 16F (the first few deliveries are 12F) and the 737-800s will go back to 16F as they go into retrofit.
